Packet / optical convergence

Leading vendors on optical market usually not as successful in IP/MPLS and vice versa. Despite that means to automate both worlds are same or similar (e.g. NETCONF/YANG, OpenFlow), not much efforts are invested by majority of major vendors to converge management streams. For example, optical vendors are usually happy with their YANG service models, IP/MPLS vendors with their own.

As discussed above, additional complexity comes from immature convergence between optical vendors.

Hierarchical controllers help IP/MPLS and optical domains to converge. Some recently appeared (but already powerful) vendors target specifically niche of packet / optical convergence. They should get special attention at least to understand what functionality is required and should not be ignored in tenders as they offer more mature functionality than traditional vendors.
